Week 9 and 10: Editing and The Final Edit

Week 9
This week was exam block meaning that we were busy preparing exams for other subjects. Mr Andrews assign us to hand another rough edit which was due on Monday. It is for him to look at them during the weekend and give us feedback for our editing. He also adds that we will have more things done in the new rough edit. For the rest of the week, I did not touch the film until Friday due to other exams.

Friday
Adele and I decided to meet up to go over our edits and share some footages for our documentary. So far it looked really good. However, there were some things that needed to be done such as
  • Voice-overs: We decided to have an adult narrating because it gave more a voice of authority which we need. However, we will voice ourselves as a backup.
  • Sound level for dialogues will be at least 8.0 dbf
  • Colour correction matches
  • The use of stock footages which is only 20 seconds each person so in total of 40 minutes
  • Check if we did not use the same points of interviews
Furthermore, we visited the Griffith University Gold Coast campus to see which building we will meet our last interviewer. This would allow us to save time and so we can straight set up the equipment on the day.

During editing,  there was a change in the script, so, some of our statistics are gone due to time constraint. Therefore, we change the way statistics are being represented and have less animation for the sake of continuity.

Editing
There were some changes made for my edit which I will go through in detail in another post.

Weekend
Found the solution to low volume for the student interview problem but it increased the noise. So I have to balance the two out as possible.

Also, I received the feedback from Mr Andrews for the overall documentary and individual.

Group feedback:
  • Colour palettes on both sections match the design suite and develop a tone for the film.
  • Use of heart beat is effective
  • Use of the same title cards show consistency
  • Use noise reduction filter over voice-overs and interviews
  • Ensure audio levels across the whole section are even.
Individual:
  • Heartbeat is effective but, cuts off a little short at the start.
  • No Voice-over throughout (I imagine to be recorded). Ensure levels match other sections.
  • Colour palette may be slightly too dark across some sections. Create mood but ensure that the viewer can clearly see what is being portrayed.
  • Overlay of selfies at 2ish minutes is good, is the strong colour difference a metaphor for reality vs social media construction? If so, ensure the voice-over explains this.
  • Interview question at 3:15ish does that need to be there? Perhaps a title card or a narrator explaining that it is detrimental might be more effective.
  • I am unsure about some of the cuts between the camera on each side of Mrs Cooper as the colour palettes vary and it feels a little disconcerting to switch between the two. Especially mid-question.
  • Audio levels of student interviews are lower than other sections (raise these or lower others)

Reflection
Overall, the things that I was proud during this week was good communication between me and my partner and the result of the documentary. However, there were many things we had to change the design which was difficult but I decided to follow those changes because those would make the final product look good.

Week 10

On Tuesday, it was the final interview for the project. Overall, the interview went really well as the professor gave us good answers for our questions but also add things that we did not expect. Full reflection on that interview will be address on another post.

For the rest of the week was editing until the due date which was Thursday for us. More detail on editing will be on another post.

Overall, I felt this is one of the best group project I have ever done due to that our communication was handled very well. I am proud of our overall project even though we went 55 seconds over the maximum time (we were not being able to cut any more clips without messing the whole documentary up).
