Week 7 and 8: Filming
Week 7
Monday
During class time, Mr Andrews told the class about how to properly ask questions for an interview with professionals.
Mr Andrews' tips on questions:
Tuesday
Adele sends to emails to the professors in Griffith and one of them has replied. We were surprised but happy that we had an expert in the fields.
Further developments: Another interview might be set by Gabby's mother, next Monday afternoon and so we send an email to her if she's available.
The Councillor emailed back and she's happy to do this Friday lunchtime and she wants the questions so we will send it to her after when Mr Andrews checks them.
Plan:
Film on Wednesday after school on shots needed for the film
(photos from the book)
Wednesday
We showed the questions to Mr Andrews and his feedback are:
Thursday
During lunchtime, we did the student interview and it was interesting.
The only thing that we could have improved better is the microphone because, during the interview, we did not how to find the menu on the camera. Therefore, we hoped that the sound could be picked up. Otherwise, it was a good interview because the students gave good points. Afterwards, after we had the questions, we send them to the interviewees.
Friday
This day was an interesting day because it was the first day that we are doing interviews. Originally, we meant to interview the School counsellor at lunch but it got changed into after school because she had a last-minute meeting.
After school, the interview went well. See more detailed post about interviews.
Also, the Griffith professor replied but want to do Tuesday the 20th at 3:00pm. However, he cannot do that due to that I have a test. So, hopefully, 4:30pm is a good time. We wait for his reply.
Week 8
Monday
We had interviewed with Mrs Smoling in which she is a psychiatrist after school. The interview went very well. However, the second camera ran out of battery during the interview but overall it went well because the main camera encountered no problem and so we got the interview. Which is good. More detail on the post about interviews.
Tuesday
We hand in our rough edit for Mr Andrews which is good
Reflect how are we doing this week
We encounter an issue where the professor wants us to meet him on Tuesday next week but it is a problem as it is during test block. I cannot go so he proposed us to Tuesday last week but it is too late as the assessment is due then. So we have issues.
Thursday
We edited on what we have so far during class time. Furthermore, our problems with the professor have solved as Mr Andrews gave us an extension so we can interview the professor on the day Tuesday where we have our test block time. Therefore, we have Tuesday and Wednesday to edit to hand into Mr Andrews on Thursday morning.
Therefore, we emailed the professor about Tuesday and hours later, he replied and it is a green light.
Also, I learn how to record screen recordings on the laptop via Quicktime Player which is a good thing.
At lunchtime, we conducted another student interviews with two students. In the beginning, the interview went really well but suddenly, the bar light ran out of the battery which was an unfortunate thing. Luckily, it was only at the end of the interview and did not affect most of the questions. More details are on Interview post on the blog.
Reflection
Those two weeks was really good because we saw progress in our filming for the documentary. We were also happy that there were professionals happy to be in the interview which is good because it makes the documentary more believable which is what we are targeting. The interviews with the school counsellor and Mrs Smolling went really well because our microphones worked and there were good points that they have addressed. Even though we have encountered problems, we found ways to solve them which is good because we do not have to stress much.
Monday
During class time, Mr Andrews told the class about how to properly ask questions for an interview with professionals.
Mr Andrews' tips on questions:
- Avoid using leading question, so leave an open question for example: Do you think...
- If the interviewee does not have the answer you're searching for then have a spare question saying "Research shows that..."
- Avoid the black and white question

We showed the questions to Mr Andrews and his feedback are:
- We need to not be direct and first warm them up
- If the person does not agree then lead them to where you want them to say
- Adress their bio and such and include them in the questions
