Week 4: Design

First Lesson: 13/02/17

On the first lesson, I continue brainstorming the plot of the whole tv show so I can then turin into a teaser trailer.  After writing down the summary outline of the show, I managed to have a protaganist and an antoganist. I have the killer's motives and the backstory for the viallain. This gave me an idea for the teaser trailer. I aksed Mr Andrews the updated version and he said it was good.

Second Lesson: 14/02/17
I finally had the full concept for the trailer and talked to Mr Andrews about it. He was fine with the idea therefore I could start planning. Also, we were also asked to write down a character outline to have a backstory for the character we are introducing.

    Trailer Breakdown
    • The trailer starts out with a tape recorder on the table and a hand is seen to take the recorder
    • Have the tape been brought to the mouth of the girl and press play to record
    • The girl narrates: she mentions the date and tells about an incident in which a fire has erupted, at the same time newspaper shows the article about a fire in the house (Note: have significant words shown such as Fire has erupted in the headline)
    • Then show the newspaper article mentioning the death of the couple who were killed in the fire, Narration: the fire has killed her parents
    • Newspaper shows the death of the couple were detectives and at the same time, a picture is shown of her parents
    • Narration: the authority said it was an accident (show newspaper), but she thinks otherwise,
    • A shot of her picking up a piece of photo which is the cause of the fire that she found at the scene of the crime while she says it was murder and also show a card “The Fool” that has a symbol on the board and a note saying "found at the crime scene"
    • Then she says it was a murder but her aunt (who’s taking care of her) told her to let go: show a shadow of her aunt on the wall
    • Knowing it is pointless to trust the authority, she’ll have to investigate herself, a shot of her in the police’s office
    • The girl explains that she theorise that the murder must have a connection to this case her parent’s worked on, show the board with the case file (M.A.22) and then transition to her looking the case file in an office and then steals them
    • “Do not forget M.A.22” written on a piece of paper that is pinned on the board meanwhile the girl goes down the stairs (overlap shots)
    • Other things she does (think of it) while articles and other information about the case long ago is shown, overlapping the other scene (have mention the serial killings, riddles, the parents working on it, notes from the parents from M.A.22), she says in order to get to the villain, she’ll have to make connections
    • While looking at the file, a letter came out that was addressing to her and it was written by the killer. It is written that the villain wants to play a game with her, the game is that she needs to finish what her parents has started out by solving their case and in return, the killer will appear
    • Therefore she accepted the game saying she’ll accept in order to find him and to get revenge for her parents by bring the criminal to justice, not paying attention to the case
    • She’ll solve the case and get the villain even if getting her hands dirty, have her putting on the coat while an overlong shot of the board, then have her wear her hat (close up) (panning)
    • Then a transition of her looking at the mirror with a determination face then look to the object in her hand in which she then holds up, in the mirror facing the camera, The Fool’s card is seen then the focus shift to the other side of the card in which is facing the shoulder or camera and has writing that says “Now it’s your turn”

    Third Lesson: 16/07/17

No lesson because of swimming carnival but start writing down a character outline.

    Fourth Lesson: 17/07/17

Finishing storyboard and character outline because we needed to hand in as a draft.

    Storyboard:

    Character Outline:

    Character Outline:
Claire Brousseau is an 11 years old girl who is born Dunkirk, France and move to Chicago at the age of 9. She is the daughter of the famous detective couple who were popular in the media for their successful in solving crimes that was hard to solve and their teamwork. Claire has hazelnut eyes and brown hair with fair skin. Her hobbies are reading mystery and crime fiction and playing chess with her father. Although she is a child, she is well educated and more mature than the children in her age. Before the death of her parents, she was more a happy and extrovert child living her childhood like a normal child. This reflects the colour scheme of her clothing which is more bright and happy. However, after the death of her parents, she became more distance, introvert and matured a bit due to solve her parent’s murder. She dresses more darker clothing. Claire’s observation is different from the rest of the people and she sees things differently such as finding clues that cause the fire. Claire’s ambition after the death of her parents is obviously to find the criminal who did this. Her great strengths is her analytical skills she inherited from her parents due to their line of work as detectives. However, her weakness is her stubbornness which can cost her life at times. Claire’s motivation to win this investigation, is to find the killer as soon as she can to bring him to justice so her parents can rest in peace. Her goal is to find the murder of her parents and feared that she is unable to catch the killer to bring him justice. What frightens Claire is not catching the killer for the parents rather than the risk of losing her life. Claire sees herself as the only one who can find the culprit without the help of the authority and that she trusts only herself. What Claire believes what other perceive her is that they always think that she is a child.

    Weekends:

During the weekend, I continued planning out the shot lists and prop list for my trailer. During the planning process, I changed my mind on some scenes. In one scene having Claire looking into the drawer in the police office, I'll have her aunt have the Case M.A.22 files. The reasons for that change is that I realised the location I wanted to film is not available anymore. I will also change the shots I will draw on the storyboard later on.
