FTM Term 1: Introduction, Week 1
This
week we run through again the film terminology and language such as
mise en scene, cinematography and editing. Afterwards, we were asked to
pick our favourite film we have watched in the past and write down what
we liked about this film on how they use the film techniques.
The film I chose is Sherlock The Abominable Bride. The thing I like about this film is the use of mise en scene and editing. In terms of mise en scene, the props and costume matched the time period the film set in which Victorian-era England. Meanwhile, the lighting of the film has used to emphasise each character. Another thing I liked about the film was the way it was edited. The colours were desaturated to emphasise the grim reality of the era. Also, the use of transition in the film shows how Sherlock thought in the film. Also, some transitions seems to match the way the film is going such as showing how Sherlock's thinking by switching from one area to another. Juxtaposition is also used when they shift between the modern day and the Victorian era via editing. The use of setting is used effectively to show Sherlock's thinking and showing the murders. A stage has been situated on the scene of the crime while the actual murder happens. This shows what the characters sees and they imagine.
On the next lesson, we went through a film sequence of a film and examine the way mise en scene was used to convey the mood to the audience. We then told to imagine a scene in our head for each of the following scenarios; a small apartment and a penthouse. For the small apartment, I imagined that the apartment was situated in a neighbourhood that is dangerous, the walls inside of the apartment is old and peeled, the walls are not soundproof, old school television and it is a mess everywhere. This shows how the character is characterised. His life is a mess and he is portrayed as inferior, weak and poor. For the penthouse, we decided to imagine as a class. We imagine a man lives in a big luxurious penthouse. He has collections of suits in his closet and has a set of watches, tie, shoes that are colour coded and clean. He has an automatic features such as clapping lights, spa and neat folded tower. This shows the characterisation of the character who is a rich business man who seems to have his life all sorted compare to the poor person in the small apartment. However, we also added another side to this orderly and professional character. On the inside, he is a bounty hunter where he hides guns in the closet.
